Community Cleanup Leader Refuses to Sign Off on Teen Boy's 4-hour Volunteer Shift: 'His mom said I was humiliating him in public '

Does this community clean-up leader have a good reason for refusing to sign off on a teen boy's certifications? 

No matter where you live, from the big cities to the rural grasslands, you're bound to have areas of your community that accumulate litter. 

Food wrappers, bottles and cans, abandoned furniture, and random scraps of clothing seem to just appear out of nowhere. This is common along the roadways, where drivers have little incentive to avoid tossing their garbage out the window. 

Someone's got to clean it up. It's not even a difficult task, but it isn't exactly a fun one.

  • Hence, a lot of places ask for volunteers to handle it. The good news is that almost anyone can do it, including kids and teens. But they shouldn’t be doing it alone, as they do need adult supervision, just to ensure everything is on the up and up. After a successful day of trash collection, the area will look gorgeous again. The people in the community reap the benefits, and their furry and feathered friends in the area do as well. 

    But this person found themself facing off against a teen and his Mom, and now they’re curious if they did the right thing, or if they were too harsh on the kid.

    Nothing major, just picking up trash ect. I was helping there out as a volunteer. A lot of teens came to earn volunteer hours for school. Rule is simple, you show up, sign in, do the work and at the end I sign a sheet with actual time.

    About 20 minutes later, I noticed he wasn't in any of the groups. I didn't go looking for him bc I'm not a babysitter, just thought maybe he was with another team. But all the groups were handingin their bags to me and I didn't see him again.

  • It’s interesting that the kid was so against something so easy. It’s probably a half-decent workout, something that a lot of teens are into. And this person notes that there were “a lot” of teens there, so this was also a social opportunity with memories to be made. 

    Yet this teen seemed have literally no interest at all in doing this. A lack of motivation is fine, understandable even. But you just have to do hard things in life sometimes. You just have to try your best. 

    Even if the kid stuck around and just aimlessly picked up one or two pieces of trash per minute, he still could’ve weaseled his way into a completed shift. Nope! Instead, and he and Mom snuck off and got a coffee, and that’s after he showed up late. Sheesh. 

    Now, he’s learned a lesson, and apparently his Mom did, too. No doubt they thought that he’d get lost in the shuffle of kids and could just earn himself a participation prize. Nope. There are consequences for actions round these parts.

    At least this is a very easy "sentence" for the kiddo to serve. Next time, he can show up on time at 9 AM, stay til noon, and still have a full weekend day ahead of him.

    It's not cruel to be honest to sign knowing he didn't do the work devalues the time commitment of the others who DID do the work. NTA

    Georgette-William NTA. You did exactly what the form is for. He showed up, took pictures, disappeared, came back with coffe and his mom tired to turn that into 4 hours because he "just: needed it. That is not volunteering, that's failed attempt to be very tricky.
